Contributory Factors: A Case Study
Peter J Sippitt MBE Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators
Abstract
When a road traffic accident happens, there can be a single cause or a number of factors that may
have contributed to the accident having occurred. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight the
need for a thorough investigation of all three aspects of any fatal or serious injury accident. The first
area is the behaviour of persons involved, be they drivers, passengers in vehicles or other road users.
The second area is the design and condition of the vehicles involved. Design becomes very important
when a vehicle is built for a specific purpose, in this case a fire engine. The third equally important area
is the road environment. This will include the road layout, the road surface and the prevailing road and
weather conditions.
