Finding the reasons of wrong-way
driving through gaze analyses

Abstract

As shown by many gaze examinations, at many junctions with slip roads to motorways in Austria and
Germany, and also in other countries, serious imperfections in road traffic control devices can be found
which may lead to uncertainties and information mistakes / wrong estimations at the driver side. These
imperfections have particularly serious effects in the dark because the existing road traffic control
devices (navigation elements) are generally not optimal for illumination provided by the light beam of
an asymmetric dipped headlight. The driver isn’t positively optical guided, the perceptibility of the
entrance trumpets to motorway slip roads is significantly restrained due to the lack of navigation points.
This effect is particularly biased by the oncoming traffic which causes additional glares and adaptations
what makes it more difficult for the driver to perceive the entrance trumpet.

The results of gaze examinations have contributed in elaborating possible compensatory measures as
e.g. the offer of design elements (pictograms and arrow boards), and LED-elements as an alter-native
option for severe road conditions.
